Waves of Knowing: A Seascape Epistemology
About the book
In Waves of Knowing Karin Amimoto Ingersoll develops a "seascape epistemology," centering the ocean as a place of indigenous Hawaiian knowledge. Drawing on oral histories, chants, art, poetry, and her experience as a surfer, Ingersoll shows how ocean-based practices (surfing, fishing, navigating) sustain Kanaka Maoli ways of knowing and offer resources for resisting colonialism, militarism, and tourism.
