Drying Up: The Fresh Water Crisis in Florida
About the book
America’s wettest state is running out of water. Drying Up is a wake-up call and a hard look at what the future holds for those who call Florida home. Journalist and educator John Dunn untangles the many causes of the state’s freshwater problems, including drainage projects, construction and urbanization, pollution, failing infrastructure, toxic algae blooms, pharmaceutical contamination, sea level rise, and groundwater pumping. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews and years of research, Dunn examines fights over water rights, restoration efforts, and proposed solutions (including green infrastructure and a “soft path for water”), and warns that without major changes Florida may have already passed a tipping point. He challenges readers to rethink their relationship with water and to adopt policies and practices to protect freshwater resources.
